Engineering Technician
Oxford Ionics
Quantum is now, and it's built here.
Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.
Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.
What to Expect...
We’re hiring a Technician to support the Quantum Infrastructure team with sub-assembly builds and parts control (goods-in, stock, and kitting). You’ll work alongside engineers, scientists and senior technicians to keep our quantum system builds moving safely, accurately, and at pace.
What You'll be Responsible for...
You’ll build and rework sub-assemblies across mechanical and basic electrical work, following build instructions and meeting defined quality standards. You’ll support system builds, upgrades and day-to-day lab projects across the quantum hardware programme, while also running goods-in, receipting, stock control and kitting to ensure the right parts are available when needed. Alongside this, you’ll maintain a safe, organised lab and stores environment (including PPE compliance, housekeeping and core EHS discipline), keep accurate records of work completed, and proactively flag shortages, quality issues or build risks early so the team can respond quickly.
You’ll have hands-on technician experience in a structured build or lab environment, and you’ll take real pride in doing things properly; safe, accurate, and repeatable. You’re detail-led (stock accuracy, correct parts, right-first-time builds), practical on the bench (mechanical assembly and basic electrical/wiring), and comfortable following build instructions, drawings and procedures. Just as importantly, you’re proactive: you spot issues early, keep the workspace organised, and communicate clearly with engineers and other technicians so builds don’t stall. You can flex between hands-on assembly and operational support (goods-in, kitting, and stock control) depending on what the team needs that day.
Essential
- c. 3+ years relevant technician / industrial operations experience
- Experience in an assembly environment with PPE and clear safety practices
- Confident using tools for hands-on build work (mechanical assembly, basic wiring/cabling)
- Able to follow build instructions and work methodically in a fast-paced environment
- Reliable communicator who collaborates well with engineers and technicians
Desirable
- Experience with goods receipting, kitting and stock control (accuracy + traceability)
- Soldering experience (or willingness to train/qualify)
- Exposure to any of: fibre optics / optics / electronics / vacuum systems
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and build documentation
- Familiarity with lab equipment handling and calibration coordination
