We are a UK diagnostics company whose purpose is to enable anyone, anywhere, to access, understand, and act on their health, to live healthier, happier, and longer lives.

We are realising this through the development of the Osler Origin – a 'portable lab' capable of performing a wide range of testing, with lab-quality performance, in a portable, rapid, low-cost, and easy-to-use manner. The Osler Origin will offer a wide portfolio of diagnostic tests and serve all major healthcare settings, globally.

The Osler Origin is powered by a portfolio of novel techniques and approaches for sample addition, microfluidic sample preparation, and electrochemical biosensing, and Osler was formed out of the University of Oxford in 2017, following decades of research.

Having recently completed an $85m Series C fundraise, we are now entering a growth phase, where we are scaling our team as we take the Osler Origin product through regulatory activities, and towards market launch.

About the role:

Initially this role will act as the Senior Process Engineer within cross functional product development teams focussed on timely completion of work packages. The remit of the role though, is expected to expand to the full life cycle of the product encompassing standardisation of core processes, manufacturing scale up to high volume, and value engineering initiatives.

Working closely with the Project Design Lead, the initial deliverables of the role are to support the design and development phases of products, sub-assemblies, and components, ensuring design intent is achieved through the defining, trialling, and implementing of robust, scalable, and efficient manufacturing processes.

Applying your expertise and experience in Process/Manufacturing Engineering, you will be expected to contribute to the scoping and defining of project deliverables and outcomes, the subsequent planning of tasks, timelines, and resources, and the co-ordination of daily and weekly activities to ensure plans and outcomes are achieved. The role is envisaged to be both a key point of contact within the distinct work packages as well as a subject matter expert offering support and guidance when called upon by wider elements of the business.

Operating through a matrix structure model, and at the coalface of project activities, you will be expected to lead a blend of internal technical resources and external supplier and/or service providers. Within the matrix structure they should lead their team by example - championing and role-modelling the core values of Osler Diagnostics in all activities and interactions undertaken.

Beyond the product development phases you will be expected to apply your acquired knowledge and prior expertise in assisting the journey to full commercialisation. This will involve growing the operational capability internally, and through third party manufacturing, to achieve high volume production of multiple assays. Therefore, the ability to consider the future state, while gathering learnings in the present, is a key expectation of the role.

Main responsibilities:

  • In all areas within own remit, foster a workplace culture that prioritises the health, safety, and well-being of its employees, demonstrating a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies.

  • In conjunction with Product Development Lead, determine process engineering scope and develop work plans for complex technical projects to achieve defined objectives and outcomes.
  • Set objectives, and schedule work package deliverables, ensuring appropriate and relevant division of work & responsibility across a multi-disciplinary technical team.
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of projects, leveraging internal and 3rd party resources, and ensuring planned activity streams are resourced correctly, risks are mitigated, obstacles overcome, and goals achieved.
  • Assemble and circulate reports to document project status.
  • Assume role of Subject Matter Expert for all Process Engineering activities within project/work package, contributing to product design (DFx, dFMEA) and process development (pFMEA, PV), proactively applying own expertise to identify potential risks to the efficacy of defined outcomes and clarifying areas of technical complexity.
  • Act as a coach and mentor to colleagues improving knowledge, competence, and capability, of individuals and teams.
  • Act as key Point of Contact for other functions across the business, supporting engineering change control, quality investigations, productivity initiatives, risk mitigations, and 3rd party partnering. Proactively develop, maintain, and leverage collaborative, cross-functional relationships (Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Production, Facilities) and external networks/relationships in support of own, and wider, business deliverables.
  • Support future state manufacturing initiatives - scale ups and value engineering - providing technical support on selection and implementation of new equipment, the drafting and reviewing of procedures, the effectiveness of training, while ensuring integrity of product design and intent is within scope and maintained.
  • Contribute to the selection, and facilitate the on-boarding, of new suppliers, supporting the evaluation of vendor capabilities, preparation and issuance of RFI/URS/ RFQ documentation, and review of vendor’s documents (drawings, datasheets, specifications, calculations).
  • Lead complex technical discussions with third parties in order to facilitate appropriate technical decisions.
  • Continually evaluate product, assess processes, and operational performance data, preparing and coordinating reviews, studies, and proposals.
  • Produce relevant and appropriate reports providing data, commentary, and narrative to key stakeholders, senior management, and 3rd parties as required.
  • Contributes at key product/performance reviews, as required representing the process engineering discipline providing inputs for consideration and expert knowledge as required.
  • Actively promote the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
