Evolito’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of electric propulsion in aerospace applications in support of a net-zero world. We will help to revolutionise personal mobility and transform our towns and cities with clean, noise-free air transportation.

Evolito develops and manufactures class-leading, lightweight, high-power, and high-torque-density electric propulsion systems for a range of aerospace markets, including EVTOL, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and General Aviation.

As well as ultra-high performance, low-weight electric motors and controllers, Evolito specialises in high integrity, bespoke battery systems for the aerospace and defence markets. The team is scaling rapidly and has ambitious growth plans over the next twelve to eighteen months.

As part of our current high-growth phase, we are looking for a Design and Build Engineer to be responsible for the expansion of Evolito’s Test Capabilities through the design, build and commissioning of the next generation of verification rigs for our Electric Propulsion Units.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing robust test rigs to meet defined requirements for electric propulsion units, motors, controllers, and cooling systems.

  • Creating components and assemblies using NX CAD software, with data managed through Teamcenter.

  • Releasing engineering drawings in accordance with BS8888 standards for external manufacturing.

  • Managing rapid prototyping activities, including setting up and overseeing 3D printing jobs.

  • Building and maintaining test rig Bills of Materials (BoMs) and top-level timing plans to ensure delivery aligns with schedule and budget.

  • Assembling test rigs using a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Installing and commissioning instrumentation for measuring temperature, flow, pressure, torque, speed, voltage, current, vibration, and other parameters.

  • Configuring ancillary rig systems such as drives, fluid conditioning units, power supplies, and data acquisition systems (DAQs).

  • Developing operational work instructions and managing maintenance and calibration schedules.

  • Scoping and recommending manufacturing equipment to improve rig delivery efficiency.

  • Leading health and safety compliance activities, including risk assessments, CoSHH, PUWER, contractor RAMS, electrical sign-off, internal training materials, and updates to training matrices.

Skills and experience required:

  • Degree level in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace or Automotive Engineering, or equivalent

  • Proven experience designing complex test rigs for rotating machinery performance validation (motors, controllers, batteries, sub-systems)

  • Ability to conduct hand calculations to support and justify design decisions

  • Strong hands-on skillset to build and commission rigs using a range of tools

  • Design for manufacturing capability with material science knowledge

  • Knowledge of mechanical fastening methods, flow systems, and power integration

  • Experience implementing sensing solutions within test rig design to meet measurement requirements

  • Demonstrated initiative and effective time management

  • Demonstrated track record of engineering ability in an electrical or mechanical discipline

  • Strong collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams

  • Experience of working within a Tier 1 environment is preferred

  • Instinctive problem-solving skills coupled with a sound analytical approach

  • A 'self-starter' attitude with energy and enthusiasm, with the ability to thrive in a small business environment

  • Ability to work under pressure while managing conflicting demands against tight deadlines

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • A flexible approach to work

  • UK driving license and willingness to travel within the UK and abroad if required.

Desirable:

  • Experience setting up DAQs (LabView, VeriStand) and test rig automation with safety features

  • Formal training in the use of tool room equipment (pillar drills, milling machines, lathes)

  • Experience working with hazardous voltages, ideally certified to HaV Level 3 Authorised Person

  • Experience conducting gauge R&R studies and data analysis (MATLAB) to verify rig performance

  • Experience with applying Finite Element Analysis (FEA), such as modal analysis, to inform and optimise the design of structural components

  • Understanding of rotating machinery, including rotor dynamics, bearing schemes, thermal management, and torsional analysis.
