Aerothermal Engineer

Alloyed is a young venture-funded company of more than 160 world-class metallurgists, mechanical/design engineers, and software developers working across 3 offices in the UK and 1 in Seattle to build the future of advanced metal components for the high-end industry of consumer electronics. To do this, it uses proprietary software packages which combine advanced machine learning and physical modelling to invent better alloys, devise better ways to process them, and design better 3D-printed components.

Alloyed is seeking a highly motivated Aerothermal Engineer with expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to support the prototyping and development of microturbines across different thrust ranges. This role involves close collaboration with experimental teams to validate simulations and improve designs. You will report to the Design Lead and play a key role in optimizing jet engines.

You will be based at Abingdon Business Park in South Oxford. A highly competitive remuneration package is offered, including salary and equity incentives.

  • Conduct CFD simulations, focusing on reacting flows, multiphase fluid dynamics, and heat transfer to optimize microturbine performance.
  • Work closely with experimental teams to validate simulation results and refine designs.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize simulation models and workflows for turbine development.
  • Analyse thermodynamic performance and contribute to design improvements.
  • Interpret simulation results, generate technical reports, and present findings.
  • Create custom algorithms and processes to improve design workflow efficiency and fidelity.
  • Maintain high-quality standards for design iterations, models, and documentation.
  • Strong proficiency in CFD tools (e.g., Altair, Fluent, Converge or similar).
  • Experience in reaction flow simulations and thermodynamic analysis.
  • MSc with at least 3 years of industrial experience in CFD/reacting-flows, or a PhD in a relevant field (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar)
  • Good understanding of jet engines, microturbines, and thermodynamic principles.
  • Creative problem-solving and willingness to learn & develop models for new jet engine components
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours when required.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks).
  • Experience with FEA analysis for structural analysis
  • Experience with surface-based modelling
  • Understanding of quality procedures
  • Good understanding of the additive-manufacturing process (especially LPBF)
  • Good understanding of consumer electronics, technology and devices.
  • Experience in engineering consultancy
